Virtualization, which has saved enterprises millions in the datacenter, is now moving to the desktop. However, the deployment of existing virtual desktop solutions have been hampered by poor performance, provisioning difficulties, significant upfront infrastructure costs and operating system licensing hassles.

RingCube vDesk solution delivers enterprise desktop virtualization that increases user productivity, lowers desktop management costs and eliminates the performance and resource overhead of legacy virtualization technologies. Users can run their vDesk workspace at the office or on unmanaged PCs – at home, or at a client site. When users start their vDesk workspace, it transforms a Windows PC into their own familiar and personalized workspace where users can access their files, applications, settings and entire desktop, just as if they were on their own PC.

vDesk Advantages:

  • No second operating system to license or manage
  • High-performance virtualization technology
  • Four Flexible deployment options:
    PC, Drive, Network, VDI
  • MobileSync provides offline synchronization
  • No need for data center build out

MobileSync and Deployment Methods
vDesk MobileSync enables users to synchronize their vDesk workspace between any of the four vDesk deployment options (PC, Drive, Network, VDI) and work offline. While offline, users become truly mobile by being able to access their virtual workspace anytime, anywhere.

Four deployment modes
  1. PC – vDesk is stored and runs locally on the users’ PC
  2. Drive – vDesk is stored on USB drive, or other removable media and run locally
  3. Network – vDesk is stored on a network file share and runs locally
  4. VDI – vDesk is stored in the data center and accessed remotely over VDI

Network Virtualization and Isolation
vDeskNet provides network virtualization and isolation of network traffic between the host PC and the vDesk virtual workspace. The separation of network traffic both enables VPNs to run inside the virtual workspace and prevents malware on the host PC from viewing traffic coming from the virtual workspace.

Integrated Encryption and Security
vDesk integrates 3rd party encryption tools to protect against data loss and provides native host security scanning capabilities to ensure that the host PCs is secure prior to launching a vDesk workspace.

Provisioning and Policy Enforcement

vDesk provides automated provisioning and enables IT administration to distribute vDesk workspaces to thousands by updating one master workspace. Administrators can also enforce policies assigned to vDesk workspaces.

Workspace Updates
When administrators want to provision new applications, upgrade existing applications, add data files, or change settings, they simply make an update to the vDesk master workspace and those changes are automatically provisioned to the user at their next login, without any changes to the virtual machine template.

Lower Desktop Management Costs and Licensing
vDesk enables IT organizations to dramatically lower the cost of desktop management by accelerating desktop provisioning, simplifying backup and increasing user productivity.

High Performance and Lightweight Execution
vDesk provides a virtual desktop that performs at 99% of a traditional PC with a virtualization layer that requires only 40-60MB of disk space and 45MB of RAM. In comparison, a local virtual machine or VDI deployment performs at roughly 70% of a traditional PC with a virtualization layer that requires 2-4GB of disk space and 512MB-2GB of dedicated RAM.

Increased User Mobility and Productivity
vDesk enables users to become truly mobile by being able to move their personalized desktop between a desktop PC, a laptop, VDI and a portable USB drive to provide access to their desktop from any PC, whether they are online or offline.

Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery
vDesk automatically backs up every desktop to a network file share. If a user looses their PC or portable drive containing their vDesk Workspace, they can login to the vDesk User Portal to download an up-to-date copy of their personalized desktop and be up and running in minutes without the help of their IT organization.

No Data Center Build Out
You do not need to install a large central server farm to use vDesk. To use vDesk on the network, you can start with a simple Windows file share, or even deploy personalized desktops on hard drives or USB devices.

Simple and Scalable Deployment
With vDesk, you can deploy exactly what you require, whether it is virtualization for a department or a single class of user or your entire global enterprise.

Utilize Existing Virtual Desktop Infrastructures (VDI)
If you have already got an investment in VDI, vDesk can help you to make that deployment run smoother, with minimal storage space, and provide light weight offline support. vDesk also provides persistent  for non-persistent pool deployments, reducing your VDI costs and allowing your users retain their own personalized desktop, enabled via single sign on.

RingCube Workspace Virtualization Engine

RingCube has pioneered a new approach to desktop virtualization called Workspace Virtualization that is designed to meet the enterprise desktop computing requirements including performance, management and mobility. With 24 patents pending, RingCube’s breakthrough Workspace Virtualization Engine (WVE) provides the full Windows desktop experience of a local virtual machine with the performance of application virtualization to deliver a unique desktop virtualization solution that eliminates the barriers to adopting desktop virtualization in the enterprise.

Sitting in the architectural middle-ground between application virtualization and hypervisor-based virtualization (virtual machines) is workspace virtualization.  Workspace virtualization is a approach that encapsulates and isolates an entire computing workspace. At a high-level, the workspace is comprised of everything above the operating system kernel – applications, data, settings, and any non-privileged operating system subsystems required to provide a functional Windows desktop computing environment. For deeper workspace virtualization, the virtualization engine implementation virtualizes privileged code modules and full operating system subsystems through a kernel-mode WVE. The WVE provides a foundation for executing a full workspace that can join an enterprise domain, has an isolated network stack and supports applications such as endpoint security, databases, and PC management software that require drivers and security services.

Whitepaper
“Workspace Virtualization is an emerging technology category which decouples the user’s workspace – applications, data and personalized settings – from the underlying operating system, simplifying the creation, provisioning and management of end-user computing environments which are mobile and can be customized by the end-user without requiring a second operating system.”

vDesk MobileSync

vDesk MobileSync enables users to synchronize their vDesk workspace between any of the four vDesk deployment options and work offline. While Offline, users become truly mobile by being able to access their virtual workspace anytime, anywhere.

For example, a user can access their vDesk through VDI while in the office and check out their vDesk workspace to a laptop or portable drive for a business trip or to work at home.

When they come back to the office, they are prompted automatically to check in and synchronize their vDesk Workspace to the network. Once checked in, the user can access their vDesk workspace through VDI and have all the changes that were made offline reflected in their online vDesk workspace.

vDesk Workspace

vDesk Workspace

The vDesk workspace separates the user's desktop environment, including applications, data, and settings, from the operating system. Users can personalize their workspaces and access them anytime, anywhere via the four different deployment methods. The vDesk architecture allows the vDesk workspace to run at 99.8% of the host PC's performance providing a seamless user experience. Different vDesk workspaces can be created for individual users or user groups and can be updated and centrally provisioned via the vDesk Administration server.

vDesk Client

The vDesk Client provides a single interface for users to download, create, launch and manage vDesk workspaces. vDesk Client downloads using a signed Java applet plug-in through the vDesk Client Portal. Using vDesk MobileSync, the vDesk Client allows users to effortlessly checkout and check in their workspaces for offline mobility.

vDesk Administration Server

vDesk Administration Server

The vDesk Administration Server makes creating, deploying and managing virtual desktop environments easy and less costly for enterprises. When administrators need to provision new applications, update existing applications or deliver data to the users' workspace, they simply make the change in the master workspace, apply the new version of the master to the user or group, and a differential update is automatically pushed to the user at their next login. IT administrators can also manage the following policies at a user, group, workspace or global level:

  • Authentication and access control
    (Active Directory Integration)
  • Workspace encryption
  • Pre-login host security scan
  • Isolation and data leakage prevention
  • Revocation of workspaces
